Do What Brings You Joy

When I started my YouTube channel I was looking at what others were doing to figure out what I was doing.

But the more I looked at others, the more paralysed I was.

Comparing myself to others lead me to believe that I had to fit a box to be successful on that platform.

I know, this is 101 social media, don’t compare yourself to others... well, it took me a few months to really learn that lesson.

After taking a break and clearing my head, I was ready to start writing content again.

Only this time I took a different approach. I decided to not go and look at what others were doing, but to just create whatever I wanted to create.

I wrote about my experience of starting a YouTube channel, which lead me to write about my burn out, which lead me to write this blog post you’re reading.

What I’ve learned in this short amount of time as a content creator, is that you have to create what makes you happy, or you’ll be miserable doing it.

Writing and creating content is like taking pieces of yourself and putting it into a nice package for others to look at. If you’re not 100% aligned with your message, you’re at risk of losing yourself.

What I love about the people I look up to is their authenticity, and how they manage to let their personality come through in their content.

It seems only fair to believe that I’ll also find success by being myself.

I think there’s more than one way to success as a content creator and business owner, and that it is a very personal journey. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel, but you do have to learn what works for you by trial and error, and figure out how to remain authentic in the process.

You probably started your brand or your business because you were sick of people telling you what to do and you wanted to build something for yourself, to find a form of freedom you don’t have in your current circumstances.

So as corny as it sounds, be yourself. Do what brings you joy.
